Great to hear someone get into depth on this topic, even as someone who hasn't had much long-term close interaction with local communities. I'm a...pescatarian (I don't *think* I make the mistake that you called out, but I'll pay more attention from now on!).

The place where it did cause some minor friction is actually Madagascar (college semester abroad) - at the time I was a bit more flexible than I am now with meat generally, but I was picky about the preparation (or lack thereof you might say) so maybe you could argue it was more a strong preference than a lifestyle. At least I had no problem eating the rice and beans there twice a day for three months!
